Very often I get messages from people who like the way I write or speak and want to learn how to communicate like I do (by the way I have never really thought of myself as a writer – that’s talk for another day)
I tell all of them virtually the same thing...
To get good, you need mastery, and for me that comes in 3 stages… And this is not limited to communication
- Know-How (Study) – get enough information and knowledge in the terrain you want to play… All the information in the world is doubling every 3 – 6 months, Be a student of History (in your field), a student of trend, and a student of emerging opportunities.
Have adequate, uncommon and deep knowledge in your area of influence … Empty bags simply do not stand upright.
- PRACTICE – This is where the miracle happens.
The number one way to get good as a footballer is to play football so much, everyday… The best in every field train hours every day in their craft.
The best way to improve your writing skills is to write everyday. The best way to improve your speaking skills is to speak everyday, even if it’s to 2 people in their kitchen (my family almost got tired of me) the best way to improve your selling skills is to go out and sell everyday.
There’s no substitute to this, the best in the world have at least 10,000 hours of practice.
And this is the best definition for practice I’ve seen: Practice is what you do when the consequences for failing is not so great. (I learnt this from Fela Durotoye 8 Years ago)
So if you want to be a very good writer for example, don’t mind screwing up in your first 100 articles, just make sure you write everyday and give it your best shot each time
- This is when you get to the point of Unconscious Competence, when you consistently get the best and latest information, best practices, up to date tools, technology and use all these to create the system that uniquely suits you and help you expand your influence
It’s not rocket science. You just must be willing to do the work
